Rich Melcher…blog introduction…“Corsair Connections”
Authentic. Inclusive. Diverse. Challenging. Intriguing…
Some words to describe my new blog—“Corsair Connections”
Corsair? Why Corsair? Well, at age 14, I “fell in love” with a World War II fighter plane (just like some boomer would fall in love with a ‘64 GTO) that guarded the South Pacific and often landed on aircraft carriers…the Corsair. I fell in love with it because of a 1976 TV show that starred Robert Conrad—“Bah, Bah Black Sheep”—about a renegade squadron of Marine Corsair pilots who, even though they were rowdy and unhinged on land, could fight in the air like hawks.
With such a huge engine (2,000 horse power), the cockpit had to be placed in the middle of the plane, not the nearer-front, as with other WW II-era fighter planes. It had unique gull-shaped wings and was dark-blue in color.
In 2006, I reunited with the memories of my Corsair love affair in ’76 and adopted “Corsair” as my pen name. I so liked it that I actually changed my legal middle name from Louis to CORSAIR in 2008. Richard Corsair Melcher is now on my Social Security card and driver’s license! …a name I relate to and identify with.
Corsair represents how I see myself—unique in thought, agile in mind, forceful with pen, and authentic—through & through! Thus, “Corsair Connections” was a good fit for the name of this blog.
Also, this blog is a creation that was spawned from a particular MOMENT of my life: on Wednesday, March 31, 1982, I spontaneously took up a pen and began writing in a yellow, 80-page theme book, which became my journal—a journal now including over 16,000 pages, and inspiring more than 200 poems, dozens of spiritual articles, and 8 books. This was my “born again experience,” giving me a new life as a writer, thinker, thought-provoker.
You will never know what style, topic or genre my writings will present—since they come from the heart and are inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yes, I am a Christian, and a Catholic. Also, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 1980, so I guess you could call me…
~a poetic bipolar believer~
Here you will find poetic expression, bipolar memoir and spiritual commentary—among a host of other interesting topics. I hope you can join me on this journey.
My best, Rich Melcher
Originally from Buffalo, Minnesota, Rich Melcher has been writing since 1982 and has self-published eight books on spirituality, mental health, empowering youth and other inspirational topics. His most recent book, 55 Reflections of a Searching Skeptic, is a literary mosaic composed of an eclectic assortment of spiritual, mental health and self-development reflections. Barbara Bamberger Scott, of Pacific Book Review, states, "Rich Melcher's gifts are fully developed here in this varied, thought-provoking collection, and his readers will hope for more to come." As the youngest of nine in a big ol' Catholic family, Rich offers a unique perspective of life and his spiritual journey. In 55 Reflections, he guides readers through a potpourri of varied reflections, from biblical commentary, to experiences dealing with his bipolar disorder, to days of being an urban middle school teacher's aide, and many more. Rich enjoys creating watercolor & calligraphy greeting cards, with meaningful quotations imprinted on the cards, written with his own unique calligraphic style. He also enjoys rollerblading, cross-country skiing, ice skating and just plain walking. Walking is his regular go-to exercise, his stress reliever and his creative thought activator. Rich hopes to get his self-published book, 55 Reflections, published by a traditional publisher, and out into the marketplace within a year's time. "55 Reflections is my most comprehensive and creative work, and I would like it to get in the hands, on the screens (e-book) and into the ears (audio book) of as many people as possible. It is not a fast read, but a 'slow read,' in that readers will pause to ponder the significance of the poetry and prose." Rich is a Certified Peer Specialist, and lives with his wife, Sandra, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
